yesterday i received a weathered envelope from japan that enclosed a few copies of the november issue of japan's surfside style magazine, blue. blue is a beautifully designed magazine that speaks to the creative, independent surf culture around the world.

last fall, the we were visited by takashi and junko here at the shop. they took some photos, asked some questions and they were on their way.

a few weeks later we heard that they were doing a feature on the northeast.

but best yet, i opened the magazine and saw a whole feature on all our buds as well!

grain surfboards, the pine haven collective, and ty williams were all featured as well.

man do we feel lucky to be surrounded by some awesomely talented staycationers- mainers that is.

thank you to blue magazine and cheers to our buds for doing awesome things.

this past july, donavon frankenreiter stopped by the shop to chat with drift surfing before his show in portland. donavon was so great to meet and super down the earth dude.

rastovich spent a few days here in maine with these guys and it couldn't be more fun to watch.

last month, silas finch decided to raffle off one of his amazing sculptures from his show in the gallery to one lucky winner.

yesterday we picked the winning ticket, ricky rhodes.

i couldn't be more happy to send this along to ricky, as he happens to be a young photographer. the sculpture, entitled "peeper" is created from old camera parts, and couldn't be more fitting.

we seriously got goose bumps when we put two and two together.

i love when things like this just seem meant to be.

congrats to ricky and much thanks to silas for his generosity and killer sculpture skills.

2 new shapes from mast surfboards

it is not very often that shapers make their way up to maine. let's be honest, unless you are coming to enjoy the fruits of our state, you aren't usually "passing through" maine.

however we recently had the pleasure of meeting steven mast of mast surfboards out of san diego.

after getting to know steven a little and showing him around the shop, he amazed us with his 6'10 single fin hillbilly hull and 5'10 hph speedster. we now have both of these boards here on our floor to share with you.

here is a little about steven, straight from his mouth:
"Having grown in and around water (my mother insisted we could swim before we could walk), and being an adrenaline junkie, it was only natural that I fall in love with surfing at my very first exposure, namely, Wild World of Sports' Pipeline Masters, broadcast in the early seventies. One thing led to another, I met my beautiful wife in 1980, I started a career in tattooing in 1989 and enjoy both to this day. After years of mind surfing and skateboarding competitively in the Midwest I fulfilled a lifetime dream by moving to San Diego in 1997 and started surfing soon after. I began shaping in 2002 out of a desire for boards that were not readily available, i.e. unusual. I believe my years of tattooing were invaluable training for learning to adapt to the process of shaping. Over the past eight years I have been lucky enough to develop a few consistent models. Mostly boards I wanted for myself. All are a result of surfing daily in San Diego conditions, which are somewhat soft, day in day out. The result are shapes with a bit more planing surface and a bit less rocker than you would find in boards built for heavier hollower surf."

we are so honored to be featuring the amazing sculptures of Connecticut based sculpture artist silas finch.

silas creates the most amazing work out of found objects. we were sold immediatly upon viewing his creation with skate decks. this is not your average skate deck art, not even close.... along side the deck sculptures, there will be a variety of "vessel" type sculptures.

hannah, otherwise known as beach shack project, makes some really beautiful jewelry with materials straight from our ocean blue.

i got to thinking- it would be really cool to have her make me a rainbowlogical necklace from sea pottery....

well she did, and it is beautiful. it is long, slips over your head and is one of a kind.

corduroy's own jim mcginley was able to connect with the band, have a local brew with them, and shoot some beautiful photos throughout the night.

we are very excited to welcome leander johnson to the gallery this coming friday.

leander is one of a kind. in soul and spirit, and inspires me like none other.

leander is 13 years old and is doing/learning/teaching/sharing more than i could ever imagine.

we will be showcasing 12 of his photographs, his first zine based on 1966, and on opening night we will be joined by ian paige and justin taylor for a one night only live ambient electronic score that all 3 composed together.

i asked leander to give me a bit of background on his work, here is what he said:

Photographs: I wanted to find a way to capture visions of an in-between-Portland, from old to new - from original to reproduced. I find that the Holga has these qualities, it is a new version of the original 1980's film camera made completely out of plastic. The primary inspiration comes from 1960's cinema, and the work of the photographers Danny Lyon and Anton Corbijn.

'zine: I find 1966 to be a big-bang moment, culturally, a time when everything exploded into action. But that is so easily overlooked, either due to the events of 1968 or because of a watered down summary of the 1960's as Batman, Warhol, and The Beatles, The Summer of Love, Automobiles and the Vietnam War. When, in fact, the time was much richer and more complex politically, musically, and driven, I believe, by a very, very potent cinematic set of visions.

Album: Ambient electronic music composed with a range of instruments, from toy pianos, to glockenspiels, and ipod touches, and nintendo ds', all the way to advanced guitar pedals. A sonic conversation.

i really encourage you all to watch this short documentary on leander, created by portland's own the sunday best.

as cliche as it may sound- this is truly proof that age is just number.

beck's record club is one of my new favorite things, and this week's video couldnt be any smoother or sexier.

if you don't know about this project, here is the rundown:

Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.

this saturday we will be joining our maine buds grain surfboards and drift for the rockland surf film festival at the historical strand theatre.

i found these awesome shots from the 1930's of the theare. pretty cool if you ask me.

there is going to be giveaways, a chance to win a alaia, and a one day gallery show from us and our extended family members.

the strand will also be premiering 180 south along with dear and yonder, little black wheels, ishmael, and powers of three... should be good.

we are super happy to have justin richel & shannon rankin as new family members of corduroy. besides the fact that they are mainer's, we totally love their work.

justin sent along a collection of his sweets prints, (including a tsuweetnami!!) as well as a few rainbow abe lincolns. justin is also featured in the newest issue of maine home and design's art issue as one of maine's 60 most collectible artists.
pretty sweet if you ask me...

shannon, justin's squeeze, sent along prints from her maps collection. each of these works are a print from an orginal embrodered map collage series.

one of of our newest family members is tami snodgrass from maui.
tami created a whole collection for the shop of small paintings and scribbles, along with two super fat-tailed decks. not only are they super fun and colorful, they are affordable pieces of art, which makes us smile.
here are a few choice pieces from the wall.
tami also owns and designs a line of fab ladies tee's that send you on a trip- sugarhigh + lovestoned. soon you can grab one of these tee's in the shop.

this week i am heading down to the good old city of nyc. my sister has had the privilege of working for ryan mcginley for the past 2+ years. we will be attending his opening of everybody knows this is nowhere at team gallery on thursday night. i have blogged about ryan's work here before, but if you haven't checked it out- you must. the lights. the imperfections. the skin + bones.

while i am gone i will be posting up some photos of work by new members of the corduroy family.

grain surfboards open house + the creations of dug.

this is the prefect night to ask all those questions, see all the ways it's done, and be a part of one of the greatest maine surf communities around.

this saturday march 13th from 6- 9pm, grain surfboards will be opening the shop for tours, showing some classic surf films on the big screen and displaying some of the fascinating artwork of dug. if you don’t know dug or his art, this is a great chance to step into his head and see things as only he can. this will be his first public appearance since his newly debuted the dug show on get in the van. if you can't make, just watch the dug show, you wont be disppointed...

invite your friends. the grain crew will have some food and drinks on hand, so don’t be late cause it won’t last.

this past week we had a meeting with sean from northern new england surfrider chapter to have him fill us in on what they have been up to.

we quickly learned that there is some really crazy things happening with our beloved beaches right here in maine.

higgins, york, goose rocks, and the list continues.

it is very important, even if you are not a surfer, to pay attention to what is happening and help represent maine's surf community the right way- with education and action.
