one of my favorite things today | winter shakas

i was hanging up some new tee's today, and thought i should share this one with you all.

joe conway, a good friend and editor of the ever beautiful drift surfing, made up these tee's just for those of us who understand what surfing in the cold 45 degree water is like.

yes, here in the northeast we have to wear gloves, mitts, lobstahs, whatever you want to call them.

get one here.

give a gift to the gallery

sometimes it's hard finding that perfect gift for your favorite person.

that's why we thought it would be cool to offer gift cards to the gallery.

that way your favorite person can come in and pick out just what they love right off the gallery walls.

and best yet- the gift cards don't need to be wrapped- they are all ready to be hung right on your tree. cheers.

more wood!

we are super pumped to have a few new hand made longboards in the shop- greenstreet longboards and atk longboards.

both companies are making these straight from the heart and using local supplies as much as possible.

these are truly one of kind boards.

greenstreet even teamed up with our pal matt w. moore to make these boards even radder than ever.

come check these out and support our local craftsmen.

11/19/09

my new favorite thing.

well it arrived. my own grain board, built for jim and me- by me! i cannot believe how beautiful it is. seriously, these boards are simply amazing. it is an 8ft steamer model with a glass on single fin from juan rodriguez.

one of my favorite parts is in the tail block. i was lucky enough to be given a piece of walnut that was my great grandfathers, and i added it to my tail for a little history.

thank you grain for this opportunity, it really meant alot. and yes, when the board is not being used it will be right here in the shop for all of you to be inspired by, and maybe go out and build you own.

11/16/09

11/3/09

the gallery and windows are getting ready for all of you.

be here friday night, around 6pm.

cheers.

10/28/09

ever wonder how that's done?

we are about to change up the gallery again, but before we do we wanted to share one more thing from michael dacey... we love love love letterpress, and love the process. here is a little look into michael's repeat press studio while he makes a rad poster for proletariat.

10/27/09

build your own!

we really love it when our friends and customers get inspired by the artists we have here at the shop.

here is a clear example of why we do what we do.

this is jackson quinn, an 8year old friend of ours that was inspired by michael dacey's cave in the gallery.

he came to the opening night, and went right home and got working on his own.

cheers jackson!

greenstreet longboards

our friend and amazingly talented artist matt moore has done it again. he seems to be finding that 8th weekday that most of us are constantly searching for. matt has teamed up with greenstreet longboards out of new hammy and in turn has created some of the raddest longboards around.

i must be honest- this is what i have been looking for in skate for a while now. it seems like many companies miss the boat on graphics and overall aesthetics. this on the other hand fits perfectly with our approach here at the shop.

greenstreet not only make their boards from locally harvested wood, but they are true new englanders too.

pretty sweet.

have you made it to the gallery yet?

michael dacey's show, just as long as you are there, pretty much rocks the gallery right now. here is a little taste, but for the whole meal you gotta come on in.

the makings of our next featured shaper.

it is that time to move things around and start telling another shaper's story here at the shop. starting in mid november we will be featuring the shapes and stories of kevin cunningham of spirare surfboards. kevin and his shapes are a great fit for this program. here is the first line on his "about me" page is:

I make functional art – art that is designed to get wet.

how much more perfect could it get? well- to top it off, kevin is doing his thing right here on the east coast, rhode island that is. lastly, green design and sustainable construction is always part of his story.

more to come soon. start making your christmas list!

ahh. a grateful sigh that is...

this weekend was full of reminders of why we do what we do.

friday... michael dacey and his work in our windows and gallery started off the weekend with color, wood, geometry, and good friends. later that night we were joined by the pine haven collective who were shinning from the success of their own opening at space gallery, draw your face off. the night ended with pancakes at 1am, and then some great crisp fall air to help us all sleep.

saturday... grain had their fall bash with andrew kidman and his 16 short films, last hope. i wish i could have taken a quick snapshot of the room during the showing. live music instead of a soundtrack, films about family and the sea, and a room filled of maine cedar shavings, old tools, shared space, family and friends, surfers, filmmakers, and a common bond- surfing and the love for the sea.

although i didnt get in any surf, and i know the waves were good- i am so grateful for the community that we are a part of.

thank you grain for opening up your space and sharing it with everyone in a way that no one else can do.

thanks to michael for taking a week and spending it here installing and making our shop look unreal.

thanks to the pine haven crew for always supporting us with a smile and laughs.

and thanks to all that get it. let's keep going.

cheers.

praise the board!

we have been working with our featured shaper dave allee at almond for almost 3 months now. we have been extremely happy not only to introduce his shapes and designs to maine, but we really just dig working with almond.

we were able to do a custom board for our good friend and artist
nate deyesso- who built all of our awesome metal racks and surfboard stands. we had the pleasure of bringing the finished 9'0 almond singlefin to him with nate's own artwork on it this past week. his little ladies olive & matilda approved.

praise the board!

thanks dave and nate.

one of the best parts of my job

everyday i open this place up, and wonder who will i meet today?

yesterday i had the pleasure of meeting husband and wife, scott patt & lisa dejohn.
they are both artists that have recently moved to east coast. i really dig their work, and hope to put together something with them soon.

for now, check them out online.

yes, sometimes there are some strange ones that wonder in, but almost always, i have the pleasure of meeting genuine, creative people that are doing what they love- creating.

surfers journal- go get it!

one of our extended family members, liz cockrum, has a stellar piece in the most recent issue of sj.

wooohoo!

there is also a piece on the good old state of maine with amazing shots from
nick lavecchia .

sounds like a perfect thing to grab and read in the fall sun.

we will be carrying it soon enough.

fair fish

we recently met some of the folks from fair fish. we thought since most of us care a lot about what is going on and in the ocean we love so dear, that we should help spread the word about how to get involved to ensure fair access to fish for fisherman and safer, more sustainable seafood for all of us.

their kick off meeting is tomorrow evening, details here.

rake!

just got some new tee's and hats from rake. pretty cool if i say so myself.

beacuse you are hot!

high heels, red dress, and a skateboard.

9/18/09

nick says "dress up or i will make fun of you."

are you reddy?

yes, reddy- nick reddy's birthday party that is. nick is a new friend of the corduroy family and we are hosting his golden birthday party here next thursday the 24th. nick grew up in maine, and he has only surfed once... trust me- we are working on that. nick just started tattooing at
blindsight tattoo across the street from the shop.

the night will be filled with a mimosa bar, 2 bands- waranimal (with a special surprise guest) and a primitive and savage land.
lastly, it is a costume party... the theme is gold. best dressed with win the crucial brass unicorn. yes, the brass unicorn.

and, as always it's free.

just as long as you are there

getting things together for our next show. yes, another show is coming up!

"just as long as you are there," by boston-based artist michael dacey, presents a new series of letterpress monoprints alongside a large site-specific installation piece. working primarily with wood, dacey combines layers of geometric shapes with vintage letter-forms that are repeated throughout the installation environment and printed work.

it is going to be super sweet, as always.
here is a teaser shot from one of his last shows...

and yes, one of these will be in the gallery...
stay tuned.
